Die Kommunalwahlen in Südafrika waren frei und fair. Dies abschließende Urteil fälle die unabhängige Wahlkommission IEC und gibt damit den Eindruck der Mehrheit der Südafrikaner wieder. Diese hatten in einer Umfrage zu 80 Prozent den Eindruck bestätigt. Zum Abschluss der Auszählungen sieht der ANC wie der große Verlierer aus. Während die DA Kapstadt behaupten konnte, sind in fünf der anderen sieben Großstädte die Mehrheitsverhältnisse unklar. Landesweit beendet der ANC die Wahlen mit 46 Prozent der Stimmen und damit erstmals unter 50 Prozent. Die DA kommt auf knapp 22 Prozent nach Verlusten. EFF und IFP sowie die VF Plus konnte zulegen. Action SA als neue Partei gewann auf Anhieb 90 Kommunalsitze.
