Die Afrikanische Union hat vor den Auswirkungen der gewaltsamen Unruhen in Südafrika auf die gesamte Region gewarnt. AU-Kommissionsvorsitzender Moussa Faki Mahamat verurteilte die Gewalt in den Provinzen KwaZulu-Natal und Gauteng in einem Statement aufs Äußerste. Frieden und Ordnung müssten für die Stabilität der gesamten Region schnellstmöglich wiederhergestellt werden. Derweil ist die Zahl der Todesopfer im Zusammenhang mit den Plünderungen auf über 70 angestiegen, mehr als 1200 Personen wurden bislang verhaftet. Polizeiminister Bheki Cele gab bei einem Besuch in Johannesburg zu Protokoll, dass man verstärkt Jagd auf vermeintliche Hintermänner machen würde, welche die Gewalt weiter anstiften würden.
