Der südafrikanische Bergbausektor hat nach Regierungsangaben zuletzt deutliche Anzeichen einer Erholung gezeigt. Im zweiten Quartal sei die Produktion laut Bergbauminister Gwede Mantashe im Jahresvergleich in jedem Monat um mindestens 20 Prozent angestiegen. Noch höher sollen zudem die Verkaufszahlen gelegen haben. Mantashe arbeite man daraufhin, dass der Sektor in Zukunft bis zu 12 Prozent zum Bruttoinlandsprodukt beitrage. Großes Wachstumspotential sieht der Minister vor allem in den Provinzen North West, Limpopo und am Nordkap. Der mit Abstand wichtigste Rohstoff des Sektors ist nach wie vor die Kohle, die rund drei Viertel der abgebauten Mineralien ausmacht.
