Die International Union for Conservation of Nature IUCN hat Namibia und Botswana aufgerufen mehr Achtsamkeit bei den Ölexplorationen im Kavango-Becken walten zu lassen. Dies geht aus einer Entscheidung der Weltnaturschutzunion hervor. Demnach müsse das UNESCO-Welterbe „Okavango Delta“ und das größer Ramsar-Feuchtgebiet der Erde unbedingt geschützt werden. Auch die dort lebenden San hätten ein Anrecht auf Schutz ihres Lebensraums. Solche Biodiversitäts-Hotspots sollten generell vor industriellen Aktivitäten geschützt werden, heißt es.
