Namibias Löwenpopulation ist stabil und seit wenigen Jahren tendenziell ansteigend. Dies teilte das Umweltministerium laut New Era mit. Man gehe von etwa 800 freilebenden Löwen im vergangenen Jahr aus. Darunter befinden sich bis zu 124 sogenannte Wüstenlöwen in der Region Kunene. Im Etosha-Nationalpark gäbe es bis zu 366, in den beiden Kavango-Regionen und der Region Sambesi zusammen etwa 90. Mehr als 100 leben auf privat geführten Wildfarmen. Den letzten Zahlen aus dem Jahr 2018 nach gab es 660 Löwen im Land, 2012 hingegen zwischen 1100 und 1600.
