Die Regierung plant die Abschaffung der Mehrwertsteuer auf Hygieneartikel für Frauen. Eine entsprechende Gesetzesanpassung wurde gestern durch Vizefinanzministerin Maureen Hinda dem Parlament vorgelegt. Laut Hinda sollen so die Kosten für Damenbinden und Slipeinlagen gesenkt werden. Andere Produkte wie beispielsweise Tampons oder Menstruationstassen sind davon jedoch nicht betroffen. Entsprechende Gesetzesänderungen oder Subventionen für Hygieneartikel fordern Aktivisten bereits seit Jahren. Zahlreiche Nichtregierungsorganisationen stellen mittlerweile wiederverwendbare Binden für Mädchen zur Verfügung, damit diese auch während ihrer Periode die Schule besuchen können.
