Sambia schafft die Todesstrafe ab. Das teilte Staatspräsident Hakainde Hichilema zu Weihnachten mit. Er habe einer entsprechenden Änderung des Strafgesetzbuches zugestimmt, schrieb er auf den sozialen Medien. Die Menschenrechtsorganisation Amnesty International sprach in einer ersten Reaktion von einem fortschrittlichen Schritt. Es zeige Sambias Einsatz für das Recht auf Leben, so der Regionaldirektor für das südliche Afrika, Tigere Chagutah. Lob erhielt die Regierung Hichilemas auch für die Abschaffung des sogenannten Diffamierungsgesetzes, das harte Strafen für die Beleidigung des Präsidenten vorsah. Beide Gesetze stammten noch aus der Kolonialzeit. Sambia erhielt 1964 seine Unabhängigkeit von Großbritannien.
