In Simbabwe sind in diesem Jahr bisher mindestens 60 Personen bei Zusammenstößen mit Elefanten getötet worden. Laut Regierungssprecher Nick Mangwana seien mindestens 50 weitere verletzt worden. Um das Problem der Mensch-Tier-Konflikte in den Griff zu bekommen, will die Regierung in Harare Ende Mai einen Gipfel dazu abhalten. In Simbabwe leben Schätzungen zufolge rund 100.000 Elefanten. Gegenüber der Nachrichtenagentur AFP erklärte ein Sprecher der simbabwischen Parkbehörde, dass ein Disaster drohe, sollten die Zahlen nicht drastisch reduziert werden. Die Elefantenpopulation wachse um rund 5 Prozent pro Jahr.
