Die Zahl der Todesfälle durch die gewaltsamen Unruhen in Südafrika steigt weiter an. Polizeiminister Bkehi Cele sprach in einer Pressekonferenz heute von 10 bestätigten Todesopfern, KwaZulu-Natal Ministerpräsident Shile Zikalala hingegen gab die Zahl der Toten in seiner Region allein mit 26 an. Mindestens 750 Personen wurden bislang im Zusammenhang mit den anhaltenden Plünderungen und Brandstiftungen in KwaZulu-Natal und Gauteng festgenommen. Verteidigungsministerin Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula gab derweil zu, dass die Regierung ein solches Ausmaß an Plünderungen nicht erwartet habe. Neben den regulären Sicherheitskräften ist auch das Militär mittlerweile im Einsatz, um die Situation unter Kontrolle zu bringen.
