In Südafrika sind seit heute Morgen die Wahllokale geöffnet. Rund 27 Millionen registrierte Wähler sind aufgerufen, ihre Stimme abzugeben. Fast 3000 Soldaten sichern die Wahlen ab. Jüngsten Umfragen zufolge könnte der seit der Unabhängigkeit regierende ANC erstmals die Mehrheit im Parlament verlieren und zur Regierungsbildung auf eine Koalition angewiesen sein. Von den Verlusten seiner ehemaligen Partei könnte dabei vor allem Ex-Präsident Jacob Zuma profitieren. Er darf zwar aufgrund seiner Verurteilung wegen Missachtung des Gerichts nicht selber kandidieren, seine neu gegründete MK-Party liegt in Wahlprognosen jedoch auf Anhieb bei 13 Prozent. Zweitstärkste Macht dürfte weiterhin die DA bleiben, die in Umfragen zuletzt bis zu 24 Prozent der Stimmen erhielt. Die Wahllokale sind noch bis heute Abend 21 Uhr geöffnet. Mit einem offiziellen Ergebnis wird frühestens zum Wochenende gerechnet.
