Zum Schutz gegen terroristische Anschläge wird Brasiliens Verteidigungs-Ministerium landesweit rund 38.000 Soldaten während der Olympischen Spiele im August abstellen. Insgesamt werden die Spiele vom 5. bis 21. August von 80.000 Sicherheitskräften, darunter Polizei und private Security-Dienste, geschützt. Für die Paralympics im September wird das Kontingent reduziert.
