Die Regierung hat für die aktuelle Saison die Ernte von 86.000 Seebären genehmigt. Ein dementsprechender Vorschlag wurde nun dem zuständigen Fischereiministerium übermittelt. Es handele sich um 80.000 Jungtiere und 6000 Bullen, die getötet werden dürfen. Gegenüber 2022 entspricht dies einem Zuwachs von etwa einem Drittel bei Jungtieren und einem ebenso großen Rückgang bei männlichen ausgewachsenen Ohrenrobben. Insgesamt stelle die weiterhin wachsende Population an Namibias Küste ein immer größeres Problem für die Fischerei dar. Jeder Seebär würde bis zu 20 Kilogramm Fisch pro Tag verzehren. Der Gesamtbestand wird mit bis zu zwei Millionen Tieren angegeben.
