Auch ein Jahr nach den Juli-Unruhen in Südafrika wurden bisher lediglich 50 Personen verurteilt. Die südafrikanische Verteidigungsministerin Thandi Modise erklärte laut AFP, dass noch immer mehr als 2.400 Verdächtige auf ihren Prozess warten würden. Sie betonte, dass man nicht ruhen werde, bis alle Schuldigen ermittelt und verurteilt seien. Während der zehntägigen Unruhen im Juli 2021 wurden mehr als 350 Personen getötet. Die wirtschaftlichen Schäden werden auf bis zu R50 Milliarden geschätzt. Die Gewalt war nach der Verhaftung des ehemaligen Präsidenten Jacob Zuma vor allem in den Regionen KwaZulu-Natal und Gauteng eskaliert.
