Im südlichen Afrika könnte bereits 2025 nicht mehr genug Wasser zur Verfügung stehen, um den wachsenden Bedarf von Menschen und Ökosystemen zu decken. Das erklärte der südafrikanische Wasserminister Senzo Mchunu angesichts des Weltwassertages. Dadurch könnte ein regelrechter Wettbewerb um die knappen Wasserressourcen entstehen, mit negativen Folgen für die Wirtschaft und Gesundheit der Bewohner des südlichen Afrikas. In Südafrika will die Regierung daher vermehrt auf Grundwasser setzen. Aktuell wird nur 13 Prozent des Wasserbedarfs Südafrikas durch Grundwasser gedeckt.
