Die Polizei hat im vergangenen Jahr einen leichten Anstieg der Kriminalitätsrate verzeichnet. Wie Nampa unter Berufung auf Polizeichef Joseph Shikongo berichtet, sollen im abgelaufenen Finanzjahr beinahe 99.000 Verbrechen registriert worden sein. Im Jahresvergleich bedeutet das einen Anstieg von sieben Prozent. Laut Shikongo sind die Hotspots für Verbrechen in Namibia die Regionen Khomas, Oshana und Otjozondjupa. Sorgen bereitet der Polizei weiterhin vor allem Drogenkriminalität. So seien im vergangenen Finanzjahr illegale Substanzen mit einem Gesamtwert von rund N$ 41 Millionen sichergestellt worden. Zudem kündigte der Polizeichef im Kampf gegen Schmuggelei in den Gefängnissen des Landes wöchentliche Zellenuntersuchungen an.
