Die namibische Bekleidungsindustrie hat nach Ansicht der Regierung das Potenzial, mehr Menschen zu beschäftigen. Vizepräsident Nangolo Mbumba erklärte dazu am Rande der Eröffnung einer Textilfabrik in Nkurenkuru: „Dies liegt daran, dass der Sektor Einstiegsarbeitsplätze für gering- oder unqualifizierte Arbeitnehmer bietet. Außerdem sind die Investitionskosten für den Erwerb moderner Produktionstechnologien in diesem Sektor im Vergleich zu anderen Sektoren gering.“ Ein wichtiger Zweig wäre laut Mbumba der Markt für Schuluniformen. Dieser würde zurzeit von Importen aus Südafrika, Indien und China beherrscht. Schuluniformen sollten zukünftig vor Ort produziert und die Einfuhr schrittweise eingestellt werden, so der Vizepräsident weiter.
