Südafrikas Präsident Cyril Ramaphosa hat Kriminelle für die Juli-Unruhen aus dem vergangenen Jahr verantwortlich gemacht. Der Hauptgrund für die gewaltsamen Ausschreitungen sei der Versuch gewesen, die südafrikanische Wirtschaft aus dem Gleichgewicht zu bringen. Das sagte Ramaphosa heute vor dem Untersuchungsausschuss der Menschenrechtskomission zu den Hintergründen der Unruhen. Es habe zudem eine abgestimmte Kampagne auf den sozialen Medien gegeben, um rassische Spannungen zu schüren. Auch sozio-ökonomische Faktoren könnten eine Rolle gespielt haben, so Ramaphosa. Die Unruhen waren im Juli 2021 nach der Festnahme des ehemaligen Präsidenten Jacob Zuma ausgebrochen. Mindestens 350 Personen kamen dabei ums Leben, der wirtschaftliche Schaden wird auf bis zu R 50 Milliarden geschätzt.
