In Südafrika sind in der Ferienzeit beinahe 1.700 Menschen auf den Straßen des Landes ums Leben gekommen. Das teilte das Transportministerium des Landes heute mit. Im Vergleich zum Vorjahreszeitraum entspricht das einem Anstieg von 14 Prozent. In beinahe 80 Prozent der Fälle seien die tödlichen Unfälle dabei auf menschliche Faktoren zurückzuführen gewesen. Dazu zählen etwa überhöhte Geschwindigkeit, Fußgänger auf den Straßen oder illegales Überholen. Laut Transportminister Fikile Mbalula müsse man die Ursachen entschieden angehen. Ziel sei es, die tödlichen Unfälle in Südafrika um mindestens ein Viertel zu reduzieren.
