Die Robbenpopulation in Namibia nimmt nach Angaben des Umweltministeriums problematische Ausmaße an. Umweltminister Pohamba Shifeta erklärte dazu laut der New Era, dass es mittlerweile 1,4 Millionen Robben in Namibia gebe. Die Tiere würden dabei mehr Fisch essen, als man fangen könnte. Daher forderte er, mehr Robben zu keulen. Die durch das Fischereiministerium ausgegebenen Quoten seien zu niedrig, so Shifeta. Auch Fischereiminister Derek Klazen hatte zuletzt eine mögliche Erhöhung der Quoten ins Spiel gebracht, dabei aber auch darauf hingewiesen, dass das Robbenschlachten beispielsweise zu internationalen Handelsrestriktionen führen könnte.
