Namibia hat im UN-Menschenrechtsrat gegen eine Debatte über mutmaßliche Menschenrechtsverletzungen Chinas gestimmt. Hintergrund ist ein Bericht des UN-Hochkommissariats, wonach Angehörige von muslimischen Minderheiten in der chinesischen Provinz Xinjiang Folter und Misshandlung ausgesetzt sein sollen. Zusammen mit Namibia stimmten 18 weitere Länder jedoch gegen die Debatte, welche so nicht zustande kam. Das deutsche Auswärtige Amt sprach auf dem Kurznachrichtendienst Twitter von einem „schwarzen Tag für die Menschenrechte“. Ein Sprecher des Außenministeriums in Peking bezeichnete den Bericht zu Xinjiang hingegen als Schmierkampagne des Westens gegen China. Die Abstimmung im UN-Menschenrechtsrat habe gezeigt, dass man China so nicht klein halten könne.
