Der Betreiber des Zinn-Bergwerkes in Uis will die Wertschöpfung im Inland erhöhen. Aus diesem Grund sei die Inbetriebnahme eines Pilot-Werke zur Herstellung von Lithium geplant. Hierfür hat AfriTin das Knowhow eines südafrikanischen Unternehmens gewinnen können, heißt es in einer Erklärung. Zunächst sollen 20 Tonnen pro Stunde verarbeitet werden. Sollte das Pilotprojekt erfolgreich verlaufen, sollen die Kapazitäten weiter ausgebaut werden. Das gewonnene Petalit-Lithiumkonzentrat sei vor allem für die Herstellung von Glas und Keramik wichtig. Das Lithium gewinne AfriTin als Nebenprodukt beim Abbau von Zinn.
