Die Energiewende in Südafrika könne nur in einem sozialverträglichen Rahmen geschehen. Das erklärte die südafrikanische Umweltministerin Barbara Creecy heute. Man sei sich darüber im Klaren, dass Südafrika seinen Teil zur weltweiten Energiewende beitragen müsse. Doch das könne nur unter Berücksichtigung der nationalen Interessen und Ressourcen passieren, so die Ministerin weiter. Präsident Cyril Ramaphosa hatte zuletzt finanzielle Hilfen in Höhe von über R130 Milliarden von verschiedenen Industrienationen verkündet. Unter anderem Deutschland will dem Land damit beim Übergang des durch Kohlekraft dominierten Sektors zu einer emissionsärmeren Stromversorgung unterstützen.
