Gesundheitsminister Kalumbi Shangula hat heute Morgen die ersten Impfstoffe aus dem COVAX-Programm in Empfang genommen. Es handelt sich um eine erste Lieferung von 24.000 Dosen AstraZeneca. Shangula sprach in dem Zusammenhang von einem weiteren Meilenstein im Kampf gegen die Pandemie. Zuvor hatte es immer wieder Unmut über die langsame Auslieferung der Impfstoffe durch das COVAX – Programm gegeben, zumal Namibia als Entwicklungsland selbst für die Kosten aufkommen musste. Ab kommendenMontag soll die Impfkampagne in Phase 2 dann auf weitere Regionen des Landes ausgeweitet werden.
Präsident Hage Geingob hat der Idee eines bedingungslosen Grundeinkommens endgültig eine Absage erteilt. Bei seiner Rede zur Lage der Nation sagte er dazu: „Social grants are intended to support those who are vulnerable or unemployed. The principle of a Universal Basic Income Grant in the context of an unequal society like Namibia would be entirely misplaced.” Stattdessen wolle man ein modifiziertes Grundeinkommen durch einen Zusammenschluss bereits bestehender Sozialhilfen ins Auge fassen. Dabei werde es jedoch klare Kriterien für die Begünstigten geben.
Die südafrikanische Beamtengewerkschaft PSA hat vor flächendeckenden Streiks im öffentlichen Sektor gewarnt. Hintergrund ist eine von der Regierung angekündigte Einfrierung der Gehälter für öffentliche Bedienstete über die kommenden drei Jahre. Die jüngsten Verhandlungen seien eine Beleidigung für die rund 235.000 Mitglieder der Gewerkschaft gewesen. Die Regierung habe nun bis zum 23. April Zeit ihr Angebot zu überdenken, ansonsten werde man in den Streik treten, hieß es von Seiten der PSA. In Südafrika werden jedes Jahr rund ein Drittel des Staatshaushalts für Gehälter ausgegeben.
