In Walvis Bay sind am Wochenende mehr als 5.500 Waffen und über 200.000 Schuss Munition zerstört worden. Laut Innenminister Albert Kawana handelte es sich dabei in erster Linie um beschlagnahmte oder im Rahmen des Amnestiemonats im vergangenen Jahr ausgehändigte Waffen. Gleichzeitig warnte er, dass der Schmuggel von Handfeuerwaffen eine ernsthafte Bedrohung für die Sicherheit Afrikas darstelle. Laut NamPol wurden in den vergangenen drei Jahren in Namibia 100 Morde mit Schusswaffen begangen, zudem wurden über 400 versuchte Morde registriert. In mehr als 1.000 Fällen wurden Waffen für Raubüberfälle gebraucht.
