WHO-Direktor Tedros Ghebreyesus hat Namibias Reaktion auf die Corona-Pandemie gelobt. Namibia habe beispielsweise trotz der gleichzeitigen Pandemiebekämpfung ohne Unterbrechungen die sonstige Gesundheitsversorgung aufrechterhalten. Bei einem Treffen mit Gesundheitsminister Kalumbi Shangula lobte Ghebreyesus auch den namibischen Einsatz gegen Fehlinformationen in Bezug auf die Pandemie. In Bezug auf Impfstoffe hätten sich beide Seiten zudem über eine fairere Verteilung ausgetauscht. Dazu hatte der WHO-Direktor zuletzt deutliche Worte gefunden: “The world’s poorest countries wonder whether rich countries really mean what they say when they talk about solidarity. The inequitable distribution of vaccines is not just a moral outrage. It’s also economically and epidemiologically self-defeating.”
Sambias Präsident Edgar Lungu hat friedliche und freie Wahlen im August versprochen. Sambia habe seit der Einführung des Mehrparteiensystems stets friedlich abgestimmt, diese Tradition gelte es zu wahren, so das Staatsoberhaupt laut der Nachrichtenagentur Xinhua. Seine Regierung habe sich der Demkratie und der Wahrung der Gesetze verschrieben, so Lungu weiter. In Sambia werden am 12. August Parlamentswahlen abgehalten, mehr als sieben Millionen Menschen sollen Erwartungen zufolge dabei ihre Stimme abgeben.
Die Vereinten Nationen haben umgehende humanitäre Hilfe für den Norden Mosambiks gefordert. Bis Juni könnte die Zahl der Vertriebenen dort auf eine Million ansteigen, bereits jetzt fehle es laut UN Angaben vielerorts an Wasser, Kleidung und Unterbringungsmöglichkeiten. Schätzungen zufolge werden vor Ort umgerechnet über 3,5 Milliarden Namibia Dollar benötigt, davon sind durch die internationale Gemeinschaft bislang gerade einmal fünf Prozent zusammengekommen. Die Menschen fliehen vor der ausufernden Gewalt in der Region Cabo Delgado. Gleichzeitig muss Mosambik mit der anhaltenden Corona – Pandemie und den Folgen mehrere schwerer Tropenstürme fertig werden.
